Life, Well Run

-A A +A
You have probably heard many different titles - chief administrative officer, town administrator, town manager, or executive director - that equate to professional local government manager.  I'm often asked "what exactly does a town administrator do?"  Sounds like a simple enough question, but one that often prompts some reflection on my profession and the citizens which I serve.

Professional local government managers work in partnership with elected officials to develop sound approaches to community challenges and make the right things happen.  We provide a broad perspective that is guided by a long-term vision for the community we serve.

We provide sound financial management, efficient and equitable service delivery, policy implementation, and local government performance evaluation.  We ensure that services are fairly distributed and that administration of the civic organization is based on merit and not favoritism.  We are committed to a set of highly ethical principles that guide our performance.  And we seek to strengthen a sense of community by developing partnerships with residents and local civic groups and community organizations.

My colleagues from across the country have joined together in support of a program to connect and educate citizens about the work of their local government, to recognize the contributions of our professional staff to the quality of life in our communities, and hopefully inspire the next generation of public servants.

The public education and awareness campaign is entitled "Life, Well Run."  I hope you will take a little more than two minutes to watch the video clip pasted below.  While it features the variety of communities reflective of the diversity of our nation, it also speaks to our common desire to make our own community a great place in which to live and work, a place we are proud to call home.
